project for calendar studies

a site-specific experimental printmaking project recording tidal movements in light of our knowledge of astronomical phenomena

brooklyn, new york

2006 - 2008

Project for Calendar Studies used large canvas fixed to the sides of an industrial canal in Brooklyn, New York, to record the rise and fall of tidal movements. Marked beforehand with symbols & signs from both astronomical and astrological traditions, the project explored our collective & abstract knowledge about time against the experiential process of it unfolding on site through the tides. For two years, canvases were rotated seasonally before being returned to an open-air rooftop studio, where they were cleaned and sealed, becoming records of both their own experience in the canal as well as testaments to the collected knowledge contained within them.
