project for woodland
a multimedia research project exploring diurnal and seasonal rhythms in a deciduous forest in the Taconic Mountains
columbia county, new york
2012 - 2014
Time-lapse works were created from footage gathered during a two-year research project that used trail cameras to capture diurnal and seasonal rhythms in the Taconic Mountains in New York State, while stills from a handheld digital camera were made into short stop animation pieces.
All of the work position accelerated images of these natural rhythms against mechanical and quotidian sounds, creating a situation where the viewer watches natural events unfold in unnatural time while listening to human-made sounds played back in real-time. Creating a sharp contrast between what the viewer sees and hears in relation to their temporal perceptions, the works challenges them to consider what time scale they're inhabiting.
